The National Border Patrol Council would like to congratulate Mr. Trump on his election as the 45th President of the United States of America. We look forward to working with the Trump transition team to finally give the American people the border security they have been demanding. With the support of President Trump, agents will be able to fully enforce our nation’s immigration laws and protect our borders.
First, let’s face reality: The border remains dangerous and unsecured. No one can argue otherwise when we are successful barely 51% of the time. Knowing that we have no idea of who and what the intentions are of half illegal border crossers is frightening. They very well could be immigrants looking for a better life in America, or they could radicalize terrorists seeking to harm America. We do not know, and in these dangerous times, that is unacceptable and reckless.
It is time to start enforcing the laws on the books. For the past seven years, the administration’s failure to impose consequences for breaking our immigration laws has been the fuel feeding the illegal immigration fire. Under the Trump Administration, we will be able to do our jobs and get control of the situation and start securing the border.
Ironically, it may have taken a political revolution to remove politics from the act of enforcing our immigration laws. This practice was destructive and served no one’s long-term interest. Laws are passed to provide protection for our citizens and communities. Refusing to enforce the laws removes those protections and endangers everyone.
We look forward to reviewing past policies and practices with President-elect Trump and making suggestions to improve border security.
